Sinopse
Os recém-casados Celestial e Roy, são o protótipo do sonho americano. Ele é um jovem executivo e ela uma artista na fase inicial de uma carreira empolgante. Mas à medida que se estabelecem na rotina da vida a dois, eles são dilacerados por circunstâncias que nenhum dos dois poderia ter imaginado.
Roy é preso e condenado a 12 anos, por um crime que Celestial sabe que ele não cometeu. Apesar de ser uma mulher forte e independente, Celestial se vê desolada e desamparada, consolando-se com André, seu amigo de infância e padrinho de casamento. O tempo de Roy na prisão vai passando, e Celestial é incapaz de manter o amor que sempre foi o seu centro. Porém, ao final de 5 de anos, a pena de Roy é subitamente revertida e ele volta para Atlanta, pronto para retomar a sua vida ao lado de Celestial.
Opinião:
A história intercala a narração dos protagonistas, nomeadamente Celestial, Roy e André, uma técnica que empresta uma dinâmica bastante interessante à narrativa, e que acaba por ser efectiva. Foi uma boa decisão da autora mostrar os diferentes pontos de vista dos personagens, pois sem a persepctiva de Celestial, o leitor estaria mais propenso a criar certa animosidade ou até mesmo a ter uma recepção negativa para com esta personagem.
An American Marriage, apresenta-nos uma trama honesta e impactante, escrita de forma belíssima, não apenas sobre a realidade do sistema social e político da região em que se desenrola, mas também dos valores matrimoniais, expostos à condição essencialmente humana. Com o marido na prisão, Celestial, que não esperava ver-se tão cedo sozinha, acaba por envolver-se com André, seu amigo de infância. Mas Roy, inocente, ao ser libertado, deseja regressar à vida de casado com Celestial, formando-se aqui um triangulo amoroso complicado e doloroso. Somos levados assim, a reflectir, sobre até que ponto conseguimos cumprir as promessas consideradas sagradas e até mesmo inquebráveis.
Um história, em última análise, melancólica, sobre como uma injustiça social pode abalar a vida pessoal, e sobre como dinâmicas inesperadas podem sobrepor-se aos votos matrimoniais.
A capa do livro é extremamente elegante e dialoga com o tema do romance.
Um leitura recomendável.

Tayari Jones é autora de quatro romances, mais recentemente “An American Marriage”, que foi eleito para a Selecção do Clube de Livros da Oprah 2018, e ganhou o Prêmio Feminino de Ficção de 2019. Jones é graduada pelo Colégio de Spelman, pela Universidade de Lowa e pela Universidade do Estado de Arizona.

Synopsis
The newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embedment of both the American dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist in the brick of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither of them could have imagined.
Roy is arrested and sentenced to 12 years for a crime Celestial knows he didn’t commit. Despite being a strong and independent woman, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking Comfort in Andre, her childhood friend and best man at their wedding. As Roy’s time in prison passes, she is unable to maintain the love that has always been her center. However, after 5 years, Roy’s conviction is suddenly overturned and he returns to Atlanta, ready to resume his life with Celestial.
Opinion:
The story combines the narration of the protagonists, namely Celestial, Roy and André, a technique that lends a very interesting dynamic to the narrative, and which ends up being very effective. It was a good decision of the author, to show the different points of view, without Celestial’s perspective, the reader could find himself leaning to a certain animosity or even negative reception by towards this character.
An American Marriage presents us with an honest and impressive plot, beautifully written, not only about the reality of the social and political system of the region in which it takes place, but also about matrimonial values, exposed to the essentially human condition. With her husband in prison, Celestial, who did not expect to find herself alone so soon, ends up getting involved with André, her childhood friend. But Roy, innocent, on being freed, wants to return to his life with Celestial, forming here a complicated and painful love triangle. We are thus led to reflect on the extent to which we are able to fulfill the promises considered sacred and even unbreakable.
Ultimately, a melancholy story of how social injustice can undermine personal life, and how unexpected dynamics can overwhelm marriage vows.
The book cover is extremely elegant and dialogues well with the theme of the novel.
A recommendable read.
